Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

The National Museum holds a variety of articles ranging from pre-historic artefacts to modern works of art. The museum has around 200,000 objects, both of Indian and foreign origin, covering over 5,000 years. The collections of the National Museum cover nearly all the departments. It represents several disciplines, including archaeology, sculptures in stone, bronze, and terracotta, arms and armour, decorative arts, jewellery, manuscripts, miniatures and Tanjore paintings, textiles, numismatics, epigraphy, Central Asian antiquities, anthropology, pre-Columbian, American, and Western Art Collections. The Evolution of Indian Scripts and Coins gallery hosts many large sized well-lit transparencies which narrate the story of the development of various Indian scripts and coins. Some of the highlights include the 'Dancing Girl', which is a 4.5 inch bronze statue discovered in Mohenjodaro, and a standing Buddha made in grey schist stone.
