Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

The City Palace in Jaipur was built between 1729 and 1732 under the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and later additions were made to the palace complex till the 20th century by his successors of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. The palace is the residence of the royal family of Jaipur, a centre of patronage of arts and learning, an important place for worship and houses a museum that displays Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum's collection.

The building complex has many significant courtyards and impressive structures such as Chandra Mahal, Sarvatobhadra Chowk, Mubarak Mahal, Sabha Niwas, Pritam Chowk and more. There are five gallery sections in the museum namely the Textile gallery, Sarvatobhadra, Sabha Niwas, Sileh Khana, and Painting and Photography gallery. Textile gallery exhibits a vast array of Indian textiles from the last three centuries. An open pavilion, Sarvatobhadra, houses the two silver urns apart from spears, shields, arrows, etc., that are also on display. Sabha Niwas, a  room was used for ceremonial assemblies by the Maharaja of Jaipur, displays furniture, artworks, medals, and garments. Sileh Khana showcases the collection of arms and armour, which includes axes, guns, spears, daggers, maces and more. The Painting and Photography gallery is comparatively a recent addition to the museum. It exhibits paintings and photographs from the 18th century to the 20th century. The paintings include Hindu mythological illustrated manuscript series of the Durga Saptashati and Bhagvata Puran, the Ragamala, Krishna Leela, and portraits to name a few. The photographs are from the collection of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II.

The museum premises has a museum shop called the Palace Atelier. There is a restaurant called Baradari and also a snacks bar at Amba Pol.
