Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

The Gandhi Memorial Museum or the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya was established with the motive to collect, preserve and display materials connected with the memory of the Mahatma, and the collections particularly focus on his connection with Bengal and Orissa. Spanning five galleries in all, the exhibits include a number of photographs concerning his life and activities and India's freedom movement, some rare and original items of his personal use, some original letters, plaster cast replica of his used articles, a continuous panel of colored sketches depicting the life and philosophy of the Mahatma and different phases of freedom struggle, specimens of tribal handicraft, and a very rare collection of hand-spun threads by many of India's national leaders including Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi. Special mention must also be made of an 81-feet mural painting in the first gallery by Dinendranath Brahma, depicting the Mahatma's life and message.
